A Sri Lankan man with 2060 diamonds hidden inside his stomach was arrested at India’s Chennai Airport last week.
According to the BNO News Service, 43-year-old Mohammed Shakif swallowed the diamonds in 42 condoms but was arrested after a tip-off.
The police said the diamonds were worth between US$337,357 to US$674,715 dollars.
“We got a tip off that he would be about 40-years-old and has a gap between his two front teeth,” said Chennai suburban police commissioner, SR Jangid. “We waited at the immigration check and nabbed him as he was about to get into a taxi.”
Shakif initially denied that he was smuggling diamonds but after an x-ray of his stomach was taken, he confessed that he had been paid US$10,000 to smuggle the stones.
Once doctors confirmed the presence of the diamonds, the man was fed laxatives and bananas to eject them.
