More than 40 years after Steve McQueen starred in the race classic Le Mans with a Heuer Monaco chronograph on his wrist, TAG Heuer has signed a long-term partnership with actor/race driver Patrick Dempsey to ensure “the asphalt once again belongs to TAG Heuer and Hollywood”.

This weekend the Swiss brand entered “the world’s most prestigious endurance race” in support of Dempsey Racing that, in partnership with Proton Competition, competed in 24-hour endurance race with drivers Dempsey, Joe Foster and Patrick Long.

According to TAG, a long and fruitful partnership is now underway which will see the watchmaker promote the team’s achievements in its new advertising campaign while Dempsey will ensure TAG’s iconic shield is visible on the car and the drivers’ racing suits in every race.

“We are writing an exciting new page in our history − not only in endurance races but also in watchmaking,” said TAG CEO Stéphane Linder. “On the one hand, we have an actor who, like Steve McQueen before him, is not afraid to take risks; and, on the other, a brand that never ceases to amaze, surprise and excite.”

Dempsey said the new partnership opens up “great new perspectives” for him.

“It’s exciting but does come with a bit pressure to succeed. Becoming part of TAG Heuer’s living legacy that goes back to Jo Siffert, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost makes me humble.

“I will have to give my best and, as the famous TAG Heuer slogan goes, never crack under pressure.”

Linder stressed that although the signing of Dempsey once again puts TAG at the very heart of motor racing history, “it is asphalt that TAG Heuer never really quit”.

“Many champions have worn the brand’s colours all the way to the top very few have done so with true Hollywood panache. Dempsey Racing and TAG Heuer represent an exciting new expression of sporting passion and glamour.”

Tiffany & Co has celebrated the opening of its flagship store on the Champs-Elysées in Paris with a star-studded party in the 976-square-metre store.

Speaking at the gala event, Tiffany & Co president Frédéric Cumenal, said the store’s “preeminent location places Tiffany & Co in the heart of a fabled city that draws people from all over the world”.

“Our store at 62 Champs-Elysées is the ultimate symbol of Tiffany as a truly global luxury brand.”

Tiffany & Co Europe group vice president Florence Rollet, added that the store’s opening underscores the jeweller’s “commitment to business development in France and Europe”.

The exterior of the three-level store features details of the entrance to the jeweller’s Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York, including the Art Deco-style stainless steel doors and the wheat leaf pattern etched onto its windows and columns.

The three levels are connected by a Calacatta marble and limestone staircase that encircles a “magnificent chandelier” that “cascades to the ground floor”. Other interior details include gilded walnut panelling, iridescent wall coverings, and carpeting with magnolias patterned after the stained-glass masterworks of Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of the company’s founder Charles Lewis Tiffany.

JF Farren-Price buys $1.01 million watch

Sydney’s JF Farren-Price, is currently home to “the most valuable watch for sale in Australia” – the $1.01 million Greubel Forsey Tourbillon 24 Secondes Contemporain GF01C.

Store director Julian Farren-Price said the watch was the only one “among all the watches on offer” at the January 2014 International Watch Exposition in Geneva to really grab his attention with its “technical prowess and overall beauty”.

“This masterpiece has been created by Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their aesthetically and technically (ground-breaking) brilliant watch- making partnership,” he said.

“Set with almost 10 carats of internally flawless diamonds this white gold beauty combines their unique 25 degree inclined 24 second tourbillon with the stunning ‘ocean’ blue of the movement in oxidised titanium.

“I just could not resist it, and the icing on the cake was my prompt order enabled me to obtain Number 1 in the limited production series. The exact number to be produced in total has not yet been revealed, but the sheer complexity of this piece means no more than two are expected each year.”

Farren-Price happily acknowledges that the store has sold a couple of watches “north of $1.5 million” but stresses “they were pre-ordered and never in stock”.

“This is the first time we have purchased for general sale a watch over $1 million.”

He also readily acknowledges that some in the industry might be surprised he had the confidence to purchase such an expensive watch at a time when many Australians claim they don’t have money to spend on luxuries.

“Well I could be a little mad!” he said. “I guess we will know if I still have it in stock in two years. Honestly speaking though there are always customers who seek out the exceptional and I viewed this as an exceptional watch and thought one of my good customers would appreciate owning it.”

“Sometimes you just back your judgement in these matters (and cross your fingers). We have only had this watch two weeks but already we have mentioned it to a few key clients. I am heartened by the very positive feedback. It would seem I am not the only one enthralled by this watch so feel positive it will find a suitable home.”

This is the ultimate crowning piece for the ultimate watch collection… It is just one of those rare watches that draws you in and I envy the person who eventually owns it.”
