Nationwide Jewellers latest conference, held from March 27-29 in Auckland, is expected to create a new buying day record for the group.
Nationwide Jewellers managing director Colin Pocklington said “most suppliers were flat out all day”.

“One supplier had two people writing orders continuously from the morning opening until 4pm. He was worried that he might run out of order forms.”

Pocklington attributes the high level of trading to three factors – the exceptional ‘buying day only’ specials offered by suppliers; the six-month interest free finance that the group provides to members; and the fact that the average Nationwide member continues to outperform the market in sales growth”.

Pocklington said apart from attending the buying day, Nationwide members attended several educational sessions during the three-day conference including presentations from Crystal Media on social media strategies for independent retailers and the Dale Carnegie group on practical sales training.

In addition, members had the opportunity to attend the Diamond Marketing panel session in which six Nationwide members revealed how they secured $100,000-$200,000 in Antwerp pre-trip diamond orders.

“By following the Nationwide Antwerp marketing program, 19 members have so far achieved in excess of $50,000 in pre-orders on at least one occasion,” said Pocklington.

“Our Antwerp program has delivered many millions in additional diamond sales to the group. Our next trip leaves for Antwerp in a few weeks, and is one of our largest to date, with 40 members.”

Most of the members going to Antwerp will visit Gaborone in Botswana en route where e they will visit the Jwaneng diamond mine (the highest yielding mine in the world), the Diamond Trading Company’s rough sorting facility, and a large cutting factory.

Michael Hill Jeweller has partnered with the International College of Management, Sydney to create the Michael Hill Scholarship for retail marketing students.

Sir Michael Hill collaborated with Ann Whitelock Courtney-O’Connor, chairperson of the Aspiring Education Foundation, to create a scholarship which advances the professional careers of ICMS retail marketing students through financial support and industry training.

Retail marketing is a key specialisation in the Bachelor of Business Management at ICMS. The Michael Hill Scholarship will be awarded to students of ICMS retail marketing or business management. Selection will be merit based with scholarships awarded annually for three years from 2016. Scholarship recipients will receive a $10,000 tuition fee waiver and the opportunity to work at Michael Hill and “gain skills in applied retail management”.

This type of hands-on experience is a hallmark of ICMS with all students completing industry training as part of their studies. Courtney-O’Connor said the rationale behind the ICMS Professional Scholarship Program is “to build on the ICMS philosophy which underpins academic learning with real experience.”

“While all ICMS students are placed in employment for six to nine months as part of their studies, scholarship students will gain additional experience, financial support, and the public endorsement of their academic success which will continue to distinguish them long after they have graduated.”

The Perth Mint has launched the first ever legal tender coin featuring an Argyle Pink diamond.
KimberleySunset1_slider_650x350

Struck from 22-carat 91.67 percent pink gold, the Kimberley Sunset coin contains two ounces of pure gold and a 0.035-0.04 carat Argyle pink diamond. The coin depicts Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse side and a boab tree and an Argyle pink diamond “setting sun” on its reverse side.
According to the Perth Mint, the coin is inspired by the dramatic landscape of Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region.

“The image of a boab tree lit up by the setting sun is synonymous with this region’s landscape,” said The Mint.

“The iconic boab tree is a unique symbol of the area, with some growing to more than 1500 years old… Beneath these ancient boab trees in the heart of the East Kimberley in Western Australia’s far north, the world’s rarest diamonds were formed more than a billion years ago.”

Each Kimberley Sunset coin, which has a $500 monetary denomination, is packaged in a black designer case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

It has a RRP of $8880.

Vivid-Opal_slider_650x350This photo of an opal by Robert A. Smith will feature in the OPALessence (play.with.colour) art installation

A light art installation inspired by the colours and patterns of Australia’s national gemstone is expected to wow 1.5 million people at the Vivid Sydney festival this year. The OPALessence (play.with.colour) art installation projects a light sequence onto the rock surface showcasing opal’s vivid play-of-colour in spectacular patterns such as Harlequin, Chinese Writing, Broad Flash, Mackerel Sky, Pinfire and Flower Garden.

OPALessence (play.with.colour) was created by Olivia Deskoski, whose family have been in the Australian opal industry for more than 45 years, and Amara Clarke, an award-winning lighting designer. Two of Australia’s leading opal photographers, Robert A Smith, a macraphotographer, and Len Cram, opal expert and author, also contributed images to the installation. OPALessence (play.with.colour) is supported by Black Star Opal, the Australian Opal Centre, the Jewellers Association of Australia, Opal Cove Resort, Lots of Watts Australia and Diamonds By Design.

JAA executive director Amanda Hunter said the uniqueness of the light installation and its inclusion in Vivid Sydney “makes it an ideal pairing for the Jewellers Association of Australia”.

“Our support of OPALessence (play.with.colour) not only presents a great opportunity to celebrate the visual beauty of Australia’s national gemstone, opal, but also for the JAA to assist our industry’s opal sector by creating greater awareness of the gem; especially given that opals are an Australian point of difference in the international jewellery market,” she said.

“Additionally, with limited advertising budgets we are always seeking new and innovative ways to promote the JAA and our members’ offerings to Australian jewellery consumers, a key focus for our many valued members, and the OPALessence program provides this, by aligning with such a key public event like Vivid.”

The OPALessence (play.with.colour) installation will be at The Rocks for 18 nights from May 22 to June 8.

Schwarzenegger makes watch fans day

Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled his own watch collection at Baselworld last month.

Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled his own watch collection – aptly titled the Arnold Schwarzenegger watch collection – at Baselworld.

Although Schwarzenegger has previously lent his name to several watches produced by Audemars Piguet, the new watch collection, created in partnership with  Brazilian watchmaker Magnum Group, is very much Schwarzenegger’s own brand as he played a major role in the design of every model.

The collection features 104 SKUs in three major collections:
•    The Legend Collection – “inspired by the metallic, military style tools and weight room equipment reminiscent of Schwarzenegger’s early career”.
•    The Hero Collection – “conjures images of Schwarzenegger in his most iconic roles”.
•    The Heritage Collection – “presents a sleek line of authoritative classic timepieces that convey a man of strength and leadership, with an edge”.
The core market for the collection will be 20-55-year-old men who “like to differentiate themselves from the regular crowd (self-confident, entrepreneurs, natural leaders)”.

Schwarzenegger met Roberto Graziano, the owner of the Magnum Group, through his wife Ana Paula who manages the Arnold Classic sporting event in Brazil. Two years ago Schwarzenegger told Graziano that he would like to create his own watch brand and Graziano told him he would help realise his dream. Magnum Group spokesperson Cristina Rashidian said Schwarzenegger always had an interest in developing his own watch collection according to his values and characteristics such as “big (50mm and more), bold and durable”. She said buyers and media at Baselworld had responded positively to the collection.

“We were really happy and honoured about the positive feedback on the watch characteristics, price points and product positioning.”

She stressed that Schwarzenegger’s unveiling at Baselworld was simply a preview.

“The official launch will take place in the second half of this year,” she said.

“This major launch will adopt a 360 marketing approach. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the brand ambassador and his support will be adopted to leverage the marketing plan even more.”

Hatton Garden robbers caught on CCTV

Police have released CCTV images of the robbers who stole millions of pounds worth of jewellery from 72 safety deposits boxes in London’s Hatton Garden.

HattonGarden1_slider_650x350Police have released CCTV images of the robbers who stole millions of pounds worth of jewellery from 72 safety deposits boxes in London’s Hatton Garden. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Johnson, the officer in charge of the investigation into the robbery, said the thieves were “highly audacious” as they entered the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit building on two separate occasions over the Easter weekend.

He said the CCTV footage shows the thieves using a side door in Greville Street to enter the building on Thursday April 2 at 9.19pm before leaving the following day at around 8.12am and then returning again on Saturday April 4 at 10.17pm before leaving the following day at 6.44am.

Detective Chief Inspector Johnson said police were initially called to the HGSD building at 8:10am on Tuesday April 7 following reports of a burglary.
HGSD is located in the basement of a building that includes a number of other businesses and one communal entrance.

Detective Chief Inspector Johnson said there was no sign of forced entry to the outside of the building but “the thieves had disabled the communal lift on the second floor and then used the lift shaft to climb down into the basement.

“They forced open shutter doors into the basement where HGSD is, then made their way to the vault, where they used a heavy duty drill (Hilti DD350) to bore holes into the vault wall which is two metres thick and made of re-enforced concrete.”

He said the crime scene was “chaotic”. The vault was “covered in dust and debris” and the floor was “strewn with discarded safety deposit boxes and numerous power tools, including an angle grinder, concrete drills and crowbars”.

Seventy two out of 999 safety deposit boxes in the vault were opened. Of these, seven were vacant, and 11 were due to be drilled out for non-payment of fees.
